Learning a new language lets us enter a new world, changes our perceptions, alters our worldview and opens us up to new possibilities. If we can speak another language, we can think in another language and form different thoughts; we learn not only the superficial meaning of words, but all the subtleties contained within those words. We begin to understand the people themselves and foster an appreciation for the traditions, religions, arts, and history of the people associated with that language. Greater understanding, in turn, promotes greater tolerance, empathy, and acceptance of others.
Being able to communicate with someone in their language is an incredible and very rewarding experience that allows us to connect with others. Speaking at least one additional language empowers us to access information that would otherwise be off-limits and allows us to navigate the Internet as global citizens, consuming foreign media and entertainment. Spanish, for example, isn’t just Spain or Mexico, it’s also places like Bolivia, Puerto Rico or Equatorial Guinea; it’s bigger than a nation. Spanish is the official language in 20 sovereign states and one dependent territory which means that, as a Spanish speaker, I can communicate with more than 440 million people.
The necessary focus on grammar, sentence structure, word order and so on also means that we begin to pay attention to these aspects of our own language, and therefore develop greater expressiveness in our mother tongue. Sometimes we don't know how to say something and we need to come up with another way of explaining ourselves, trying to get across our meaning as clearly and correctly as we can, so it trains us to be creative and think laterally. People who speak more than one language have improved memory, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, concentration, mental aging and cognitive decline; they switch between tasks more easily than monolinguals and display signs of greater creativity and flexibility.
In a world of more than 6,000 spoken languages, in which governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations conduct their affairs in diverse languages and cultures, the employment market is global, and migration from one region to another is increasingly the norm, the demand for bilingual professionals is rising exponentially, so the ability to communicate in more than one language is vital to do well in these times we’re living in. Language skills can be a significant competitive advantage that sets you apart from your monolingual peers.

Aprender un idioma nos permite adentrarnos a un mundo nuevo, cambia nuestra percepción, transforma nuestra visión del mundo y nos abre nuevas posibilidades. Si podemos hablar otro idioma, podemos pensar en otro idioma y formar pensamientos diferentes; aprendemos no solo el significado superficial de las palabras, sino todas las sutilezas contenidas en ellas. Empezamos a entender a las propias personas y fomentamos la apreciación de las tradiciones, religiones, arte e historia de los pueblos asociados con el idioma. Un mayor entendimiento a su vez promueve una mayor tolerancia, empatía y aceptación del otro.
Ser capaces de comunicarnos con alguien en su propia lengua es una experiencia increíble y muy gratificante que nos permite conectarnos con otros. Hablar al menos un idioma más nos capacita para acceder a información que de otra manera estaría fuera de nuestro alcance y nos permite navegar por Internet como ciudadanos globales, consumiendo medios y entretenimiento extranjeros. El inglés, por ejemplo, no es solo Estados Unidos o Reino Unido, también son lugares como Nueva Zelanda, Jamaica o Sudáfrica; es más grande que una nación. El inglés es la lengua oficial de más de 50 estados soberanos lo que significa que puedo comunicarme con más de 360 millones de hablantes nativos y con más de 1000 millones de personas en todo el mundo si incluimos los que la hablan como segunda lengua.
La atención necesaria a la gramática, la estructura oracional, el orden de las palabras, etc. hace que empecemos a poner mayor atención a estos aspectos de nuestro propio idioma, por lo que desarrollamos una mayor expresividad en nuestra lengua materna. A veces no sabemos cómo decir algo exactamente y necesitamos pensar en otras formas de expresarnos, intentando transmitir lo que queremos decir tan clara y correctamente como podamos, por lo que nos enseña a ser más creativos y pensar de forma imaginativa. Las personas que hablan más de una lengua han mejorado la memoria, las habilidades de resolución de problemas y pensamiento crítico, la concentración, el deterioro mental y el declive cognitivo.
En un mundo en el que se hablan más de 6000 idiomas, en el que gobiernos, empresas y organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro realizan sus actividades en varias lenguas y culturas, el mercado laboral es global y la migración entre regiones es cada vez más común, la demanda de profesionales bilingües está aumentando exponencialmente, así que la capacidad de comunicarse en más de una lengua es vital para tener éxito en los tiempos que vivimos. Las habilidades lingüísticas pueden ser una gran ventaja competitiva que te distinga de tus compañeros monolingües.
